How to Play Never Have I Ever

With kids, play never have I ever without losers: nobody runs out of fingers, and every answer is a chance to tell a story.

  1. A grown-up or an older kid reads one question out loud.
  2. Kids who have done it give a thumbs-up or stand up. Kids who haven't stay put.
  3. Ask one of the thumbs-up kids to tell what happened in a sentence or two.
  4. There are no points to lose, and anyone can pass.
  5. Take turns reading, so every kid gets a go at asking.

Three ways to change it up

  • Stand up, sit down. For teachers: the whole class sits, and everyone who has done it stands up. Five questions make a quick morning meeting, and kids see who shares their stories.
  • Guess the grown-up. Before a parent or teacher answers, the kids guess whether they've done it. A right guess earns a point.
  • Step forward. Kids line up and take one step forward for each thing they've done. Nobody wins or loses; it's just fun to see where everyone ends up.
  • Make your own. Each kid makes up one new "never have I ever" about something they've done. Read them out and see if anyone else has done it too.

Frequently asked questions

What are good never have I ever questions for kids?

Short ones about things kids know: school, food, animals and trips. "Never have I ever held a frog" works for a 5-year-old, and about half the room will have a story about it.

How do you play never have I ever with kids?

Read a question and have kids give a thumbs-up or stand up if they've done it. Skip the fingers-down scoring, so nobody is out, and ask one kid to tell what happened.

How do teachers use never have I ever in class?

As a morning meeting or a first-week icebreaker: the class sits, and students stand when they've done the thing. The school and animal sections work well, and five questions take about five minutes.

What age is never have I ever for kids good for?

From about age 5, as long as a grown-up reads the questions aloud. By 7 or 8, kids can take turns reading and make up their own.
