How to Play Never Have I Ever

The clean version keeps score with fingers instead of drinks. It needs three or more players and nothing else.

  1. Everyone holds up ten fingers.
  2. Take turns reading one statement that starts with "Never have I ever."
  3. Anyone who has done it puts one finger down and can tell the story in a sentence or two.
  4. Anyone can pass on a question without saying why.
  5. The last player with a finger still up wins. Play again with the next reader.

Three ways to change it up

  • Points on paper. Skip the fingers and keep a tally: one point for everything you've done. After 20 questions, the highest score tells their best story from the round.
  • Guess first. Before anyone answers, each player guesses who in the group has done it. A right guess scores a point, which makes the quiet players the hardest to read.
  • Write your own. Each player writes one true thing they've done that they bet nobody else has, as a "Never have I ever" line. If nobody puts a finger down, the writer scores.
  • Step forward. For big groups and classrooms: everyone lines up, and players take one step forward for each thing they've done. The first to reach the far wall reads the next round.

Frequently asked questions

What are good never have I ever questions?

Good ones are things about half the group has done, so fingers go down unevenly: broken a bone, ridden a horse, been stuck in an elevator. If everyone has done it, nobody learns anything, and if nobody has, there's no story.

How do you play never have I ever without drinking?

Everyone holds up ten fingers and puts one down for each thing they've done. The last player with a finger up wins. For longer games, keep points on paper instead.

Is never have I ever appropriate for kids?

The clean version is. Kids from about 5 can play with our never have I ever questions for kids, which use short sentences about school, food, animals and trips. The questions on this page suit ages 10 and up and mixed family groups.

What are some funny never have I ever questions?

Everyday mishaps work best: pushed a door that said pull, waved back at someone who was waving at the person behind you, looked for sunglasses that were on your head. The funny and embarrassing sections above have 67 of them.

How many people do you need to play never have I ever?

Three is the minimum and six to ten is ideal. With two players it turns into a conversation, which is fine: skip the fingers and just trade stories.
