How to Play Would You Rather

Would you rather needs no cards, no board and no setup. One person asks, everyone answers.

  1. One player reads a question out loud, both options, word for word.
  2. Everyone picks one option. "Both" and "neither" are not allowed.
  3. Each player gives one reason for their pick, in a sentence or two.
  4. The next player reads the next question. Most groups play 15 to 20 before switching games.

Three ways to change it up

  • Majority rules. Before anyone answers, each player guesses which option most of the group will pick. A correct guess scores a point.
  • Defend the underdog. Whoever picked the less popular option gets 30 seconds to win one person over to their side.
  • Write your own. After ten questions, every player makes up one new question. The group votes for the best, and its author asks the next round.

What are good would you rather questions?

Good ones offer two options that are both appealing, or both a little painful, so nobody answers instantly. "Have a personal chef or a personal driver?" works because each side has a clear upside. The Good section above has 25 to start with.

What is the hardest would you rather question?

The hardest ones make you give up something you already value, like choosing between never using the internet again and never leaving your town. There is no right answer, which is the point. The Hardest section has 20 of them.

How do you play would you rather?

One person reads a question with two options, everyone picks one, and each player explains why. "Both" and "neither" aren't allowed. There are no points unless you add them, so it works for two people or twenty.

Are these would you rather questions OK for kids?

Every question here is family-safe, with nothing about violence, romance or drinking. Some sections, like Hard, Hardest and For Adults, deal with jobs, money and big life choices that younger kids won't care about. For ages 4 to 10, the kids list uses simpler words and shorter questions.
