How to Play This or That
This or that takes about three seconds a question, which makes it the easiest warm-up game there is.
- One player asks the question and reads both options.
- Everyone answers within three seconds. No "both," and no explaining.
- Keep the pace up: 20 questions take about five minutes.
- Hand the asking to the next player every five questions.
Three ways to change it up
- Match your partner. Before answering, guess what one other player will pick. A correct guess scores a point.
- Stand up, sit down. For groups and classrooms: stand for the first option, sit for the second. Nobody has to say a word.
- Speed round. The asker fires ten questions in a row as fast as possible. Anyone who hesitates sits out the rest of the round.

Frequently asked questions
What are good this or that questions?
Good ones pair two things people have real opinions about, so the group splits close to half and half. "Coffee or tea?" and "books or movies?" work almost anywhere. Skip pairs where one side is obviously better, or the round goes quiet.
Is this or that the same as would you rather?
Close, but faster. This or that gives two short options and wants an instant answer. Would you rather describes a scenario and asks why, so if you want the slower version, try our would you rather questions.
What are good this or that icebreaker questions for work?
Pick pairs that are easy to answer in front of coworkers: stairs or elevator, early lunch or late lunch, dark mode or light mode. The Icebreaker section above has 40. Leave money and family questions for later.
How do you play this or that?
One person names two options, and everyone picks one right away. There are no points and no wrong answers. Add a scoring rule, like guessing another player's pick, if the group wants a winner.
What are some this or that questions for adults?
Adult versions work best on everyday grown-up life: rent or buy, meal prep or cook every night, cash or card. The For Adults section has 40, all clean enough for a family dinner.
Can I print a list of this or that questions?
Yes. The Download PDF button makes a free printable of all 281 questions in your browser, on letter or A4 paper. No sign-up.
