How to Play Would You Rather

Would you rather works with teens because there is no wrong answer, only a reason you have to defend.

  1. One player reads the question and both options out loud.
  2. Everyone picks one. No "both," no "neither" and no changing the question.
  3. Each player gives a one-sentence reason. The best reason wins the round, by group vote.
  4. The winner reads the next question.

Three ways to change it up

  • Four corners. For classrooms: read a question, send each option to one side of the room, and let two students from each side argue their case.
  • Switch sides. After everyone answers, each player has to argue for the option they did not pick. Harder than it sounds.
  • Write your own. Everyone writes one new question on a slip of paper. Draw them from a hat and vote for the best one.

Frequently asked questions

What are good would you rather questions for teens?

Good ones are about things teens care about right now: school, friends, first jobs and what comes next. They should have two real options and no right answer, like "have your license at 15 or a summer job you love at 16?"

What are good would you rather questions for middle school?

Keep them about school life and weekends: lockers, lunch, field trips, pets and sports. The two middle school sections above have 60 questions written for ages 11 to 14.

Are these questions appropriate for school?

Yes. There is nothing about dating, parties or anything a teacher would have to shut down, so they work in class, youth groups and family dinners.

How do you use would you rather in a classroom?

Read a question and have students move to one side of the room for each option. Ask two students from each side to explain their pick. Three or four questions make a quick warm-up.

What are some deep would you rather questions for teens?

Deep ones ask about values: being known for kindness or for talent, one close friend or a big friend group. The Deep section has 25 of them, best asked one at a time.
